John W. Newman, age 80, died Friday February 2, 2018 at his home.

Born in Scottsville, Kentucky, John was the son of the late George Edward (Ed) Newman and Mildred Weaver Newman.  He graduated from Scottsville High School, class of 1955. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1959.  After serving in the US Army, he was honorably discharged with the rank of 1 st lieutenant.  He received an MS degree in Engineering Physics from Western Kentucky University in 1968.  He held various engineering and management positions in General Electric and Picker International.  He also had been a Vice President of Manufacturing Engineering at Xciton Corporation in Latham, New York.  While in Illinois, he served on the boards of the Aurora, Illinois, Chamber of Commerce and the Fox Valley Industrial Association.    He became an internationally recognized expert in X-Ray tube technology and design.  He retired as President of Dunlee, a medical X-ray tube manufacturing company in 1998 and returned to Allen County.  He was a member and past president of the Scottsville Rotary Club and a Paul Harris fellow.  He served on the founding board of the East Allen Fire department.  He also served on the boards of the Commonwealth Foundation, the Laura Goad Turner charitable Foundation as well as the Heart of Scottsville.  He served as a school volunteer Science Olympiad coach for 10 years during which he received a School Bell award and a national Science Olympiad Luminary medal.

He is survived by his wife of fifty five years, Jane Ross Newman of Scottsville, two daughters Margaret Weaver Townsend and husband Steven, of Mercer Island WA, and Sarah Warren Smith and husband Scott of Goshen KY, five grandchildren Matthew, Katherine and John Townsend, and Margaret and William Smith; and a brother George E. Newman of Great Fall, VA.

John enjoyed skydiving, caving, tearing down the Berlin Wall, hunting, traveling, staying at home, reading, teaching and people.  We will miss him.

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday February 6 th at the T. W. Crow and Son Funeral Home.

A private Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Scottsville Allen County Library, Children and Young Peoples’ division.
